Reference Guide for Physicians, Pastors and Counselors

In my experience, I have found most pastors and counselors are aware of the general issues surrounding internet pornography. However I have come to the conclusion that many pastors and counselors are not “up to speed” on the rapidly changing and technologically intensive issues related to internet pornography and the sexual addiction challenges related to it.
In our community, a research project done by surveying over 300 pastors. The research found that over 90% of those pastors had no in-house resources or expertise to deal with sexual brokenness.
I have found the following reference guide very helpful as a one-stop shop for information on sexual addiction issues as they relate to the contemporary issue of internet pornography.
This guide can provide an overview and give some helpful tips and resources in the rapidly changing and growing problem of sexual addiction to internet pornography.

This document is designed to provide the reader with a set of assessment tools that are by no means exhaustive. The items listed here should give the reader points to ponder while operating in this ever changing minefield called the internet. If presented properly, the information contained in this document will generate more questions than it answers.
7 Tips to Enforcing Corporate Governance Policy on your Network
Have an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) in writing and ensure it is communicated to all employees
The IT department must thoroughly understand policy to ensure accurate and appropriate execution
Ensure that employee Web activity is business related
Establish rules to manage employee’s email communications and the company’s data
Manage Instant Messaging on your company’s network
Extend your acceptable use policy to cover company’s mobile workforce
Stop unwanted content to ensure you network is available for business related use
Acceptable Use Policies
Definition: A set of rules and guidelines that specify in more or less detail the expectations in regard to appropriate use of systems or networks. [RFC2504]
Needs to be in place before there is a problem
Must be able to prove proper communication to employees
Should be reviewed by a lawyer
Internet Usage Policies and Procedures
(Typically a subset of the Acceptable Use Policy)
Internet usage policies and procedures define the course of action to be taken should someone break the Acceptable Use Policy. These procedures should be established long before a violation occurs. Employees, elders, and pastors should have a very clear picture of what will happen if they break the AUP.
Will they be terminated? Will they be placed into a recovery program? Will their ministerial responsibilities be limited?
Prevention
Prevention must be proactive, not reactive.
Objectionable material is now so pervasive that one cannot simply “be careful” while working on the internet; proactive methods of blocking content must be incorporated.
Proper prevention methods consist of (as a minimum) content filtering, virus protection, spam elimination, and firewall protection.
Prevention is an all or nothing endeavor. Every computer connected to the internet is at risk. Therefore, every computer utilized by a staff member, including home PCs, should be protected. For the price of a nice meal, you can protect your home from objectionable material.
Content Filtering
Content filtering prevents access to objectionable material.
Requirements of a good content filter:
The filter should not negatively impact system performance
The database of restricted sites must me updated on a daily basis
The cost of the filter should not break the bank. There are very effective and affordable solutions available.
It may be necessary to block access to all internet sites then allow access to only those sites that are approved. A good content filter will make this possible.

Tips and Tricks Surrounding Prevention
Don’t give out your e-mail address to anyone other than those “qualified” to have it.
When you install a content filter, only allow the administrator to have access to the installation/removal password. You should not have the password to your own protection software. If you are on a home based PC, only allow your wife or a trusted friend to have the password. If you need some type of modification, you will be forced to include the trusted person.
Install a content filter
Use a content filter that provides an accountability mechanism, a mechanism that provides usage reports to a trusted source (your accountability partner, for example).

Next Steps:
Develop acceptable use and internet use policies in your Church. Have your Pastor that owns your computer network drive that process. This communicates the obligations and expectations of both the Church and the pastor or staff worker.

Be prepared that unfortunate issues may arise. Be prepared to deal with them.
